Since I’m in the process of reviewing the Field Notes Brand Unexposed Edition, I figured this would be a great time to introduce you to the new Starbucks Roastery Edition: Coffee Origins. This is the second set of Startbucks Roastery branded Field Notes. (This is not a part of the Field Notes Colors line.) The first edition is beautiful. Think Shelterwood or Cherry Graph Field Notes in the Arts and Sciences size. (I’ll be reviewing those when I review the Arts and Sciences Edition.) Both editions are available only at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle, Washington. These special edition notebooks retail for $12.95, almost a 25% increase in costs over your everyday package of Field Notes.

The reason I mention that I’m reviewing them now with the Unexposed books is because that’s essentially what they are, albeit in colors that are much easier on the eyes. The books come in three colors, green, red, and blue. Field Notes smartly packaged them in a way that all books get rotated to the front of the package, meaning the collecting purists will need to own at least 3 sets. Like the Unexposed books, the covers are Sappi McCoy 100#C with colors on the inside of the covers being the reverse of the colors on the outside. As you can see below, yellow and blue appear inside the blue and yellow book. And since it’s the same cover stock, it has the same glossy feel. I love that. To me it means it’ll crack nicely as it wears.

There’s one detail about these books that really makes them feel sharp. White staples. They really pop against these bright, but not annoyingly bright cover colors that give them the perfect contrasting balance. From the middle page you can see the white coating end where the staples were cut. I’ve seen this before on other colored staples.

 

You may also notice on the side of the belly band, that the three books all have different ink layouts on the usual Finch Opaque Smooth 50T “bright white” innards. I’m not sure that Field Notes has ever used this combination before, but I love it. As someone who prefers grid to lined, and both by far over blank, it’s a great combination to replace the typical blank pages with a dot grid fan favorite! I also really like the choice of color: “Pantone Cool Gray 4”. It a great fit.

 

 

 

The back covers of the books feature the world’s coffee-growing regions: Latin America on the blue book, Africa on the red book, and Asia/Pacific on the green book. They also highlight specific regions where Starbucks sources their coffee.

The belly band features the Starbucks Roastery logo on both sides.

I really love this edition, but I know it’s hard to come by. You need to know someone in Seattle, traveling to Seattle, or pay ridiculous markups. As I’ve been lucky enough to come into several packs at cost, I’ve decided to give a pack away! And not just any pack, but the pack I shot the pics for the blog with.
